Achimota Melcom building collapses, many feared dead
Police and Fire Service personnel are currently at the scene of the collapse of the Achimota branch of Melcom Shopping Mall, which is believed to have claimed trapped many.
At least, three victims have so far been pulled out alive and rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, while two dead bodies have been retrieved.
It is still unclear what caused the collapse of the four-storey building, but eye witnesses tell Viasat1NewsOnline that a loud explosion preceded the collapse, injuring pedestrians and cracking windscreens of nearby vehicles.
The building collapsed at exactly 9:20am. We understand at least fifty workers and customers were in the building at the time of the collapse.
The newly built four-storey Melcom shopping complex is opposite the Neoplan Assembly Plant at Achimota and the Agricultural Development Bank(ADB).
The collapsed shopping complex is on the same compound with Fidelity Bank, Achimota branch, near the Standard Chartered Bank and another shopping mall, Sarlinesta.
A large crowd has gathered at the scene with many helping to rescue the trapped persons. So far, one person, a male, has been rescued, and a dead body has also been discovered.
Another female has also been rescued, but her condition is critical, with iron rods inflicting several wounds on her body.
Family members of workers of the mall have trooped to the area amid tears. Both men and women can be seen wailing at the scene.
The whole area is flooded with people. There is a major traffic jam on the Achimota main road as a result of the incident.
Caterpillars and excavators have been deployed to the area, which are currently breaking down some structures to pave way for their rescue mission.
Sniffer dogs have also been brought to the scene to assist in the rescue mission. Meanwhile, two more victims have been rescued and have been conveyed to the hospital.
Zoom Lion has provided some equipments to help in the rescue mission.
President Mahama has suspended his elections campaign of the Upper East and is headed back to Accra, after hearing of the incident.
Ironically, the brand ambassador of Melcom, Ghanaian skipper Asamoah Gyan, lost her mom in a car accident on Tuesday.
DSP Ernest Accheampong has announced that road users and drivers who intend to use the Achimota-Ofankor road should rather use the Chantan-Lapaz-Tabora road. This is because the main road from Achimota to Circle has been blocked with human traffic. The Police and security agencies are also discouraging people from trooping to the area, as it will hinder their work.
